My thoughts on AI use as a professional content writer
The debate about the use of AI in content creation is one of the hottest topics in the digital world right now. It’s completely changing how people address online marketing.
As a professional digital writer, I’ve spent years navigating how to use this technology ethically without losing the human touch. For those of you who don’t know, I come from a background rooted in traditional journalism. In college, I learned the traditional way of writing for print media, broadcast media, and digital media. I trained from 2017 to 2019.
When platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini started to get big a few years later, I was completely against it. I saw automated software as a threat to my industry, and at first, it was. I actually lost a freelancing job once because of it.
Now that it’s 2026, my views on this technology have become more neutral. I recognize that there are both good and not-so-good things about it. Today I’m here to talk about the pros and cons of using AI for your brand’s copy.
Pros of AI use in Content Creation
It saves tons of time: Writer’s block sucks. There’s nothing worse than staring at a blank screen for hours and getting nowhere. One of the biggest perks about AI is its ability to generate foundational content in seconds. I don’t use it to write the final piece, but it is helpful in terms of providing a general outline. Once I’ve got an outline, the creativity starts flowing.
Helpful with brainstorming: If I need help coming up with topics for blog content or social posts, ChatGPT can be pretty useful in this regard. I take the ideas provided to me and add my own little twist to them. I also use it as a visual guide for creating social media graphics, since I’m not very experienced in the design aspect of content creation.
Helps with consistency: The current digital environment demands that brands show up consistently to stay relevant. AI makes it easier to produce larger volumes of content quickly so your online presence stays alive.
Cons of AI use in Content Creation
Generic, repetitive content: Because AI tools build text by analyzing patterns of what is already published on the internet, they lack original thought. If you rely on them completely without human editing and a unique brand voice, your content will sound robotic, bland, and identical to other people in your industry. As a professional, it is very easy for me to differentiate AI-generated text from human written content.
Inaccurate information: Coming from a traditional journalism background, accuracy is everything to me. AI models don't actually know facts. All they do is predict words. Because of this, they are notorious for confidently making up statistics, misattributing quotes, or referencing outdated information. Fact-checking every single line is an absolute must, which can sometimes take up more time than the tool actually saved you.
It lacks the human touch: Real connection happens when readers feel a human pulse behind the words. AI cannot share personal experiences, it cannot conduct interviews to get unique source perspectives, and it cannot inject true empathy or nuance into a story. Without that human touch, it's incredibly difficult to build authentic authority.
Strategy Beats Automation
When it comes to using AI in content creation, there are a few things that stand clear. AI can be a great assistant for speed and brainstorming, but it falls short in terms of strategy, accuracy, and emotional resonance.
While it's tempting to use these tools to push out endless pages of text, automated words won't build long-term authority or convert casual readers into loyal clients. It takes a seasoned editorial eye to ensure your copy is well-researched, unique, and matches your business goals.
Instead of spending your valuable time trying to master prompts to bypass these limitations, let an expert handle the storytelling for you.
